Professor Ewa Roos from Denmark discusses the strong evidence behind GLA:D®, and how its exercises help people with hip and knee arthritis as well as the successful of the program in Denmark.

GLA:D®  PROGRAM


WHAT IS GLA:D®

GLA:D® stands for Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark. It is a physiotherapy led education and strengthening exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms.

Outcomes include:

  • Reduced joint pain
  • Improve joint function and quality of life
  • OA symptom progression reduction of 32%
  • Reduction in use of pain killers and the like of medication
  • less people on sick leave.

GLA:D® participants consistently reported high levels of satisfaction with the program and also further gain in levels of physical activity after 12 months of commencing the program.

WHO CAN DO THE GLA:D® PROGRAM?
The GLA:D® Australia research program is for participants that have a hip/knee joint problem. You may be excluded from completing the program if you have:
  1. Other symptoms that are more pronounced than OA (ie. chronic pain or fibromyalgia
  2. Other reasons for your pain (such as inflammatory arthritis, tumor or fracture related pain or soft tissue injury)
  3. Poor understanding of, or inability to follow instruction and communication in English.

NOTE: Whilst you may be excluded from the “national research program,” pending your assessment you may still be able to participate GLA:D® rehab with us at Dynamic Stability.

HOW TO GET ON THE PROGRAM?
  1. Register yourself to attend one of our up coming Education Session
  2. Book an initial assessment with one of our GLA:D physiotherapist to obtain baseline measures
  3. Register and consent to participate online

WHAT’S NEXT?

  1. Attend 2x education sessions (these are now available online)
  2. Attend the 6 weeks of Class Based Exercise, 2x/week (12 x 1 hour classes in total)
  3. Present for Follow up at:
    • 3 months post baseline measure
    • 12 months online questionnaire

At the completion of  the initial 6 week block of classes, participants have the option to:

  • continue the classes on a casual basis (once or twice per week)
  • continue with a home based exercise program set out by our physiotherapist

NOTE: Health fund rebates are available for all classes under code 560, please check with your health fund to see if you are covered.
