How does Infrared Therapy work?
Infrared light penetrates to the inner layers of the skin at about 2 to 7 centimeters deep. Hence, it reaches the muscles, nerves and even the bones. Many studies have shown that a frequency of infrared light, with wavelengths from 700 to 1,000 nanometers, is best used for healing inflammatory conditions.
The use of electricity for healing purposes began in 2,750 BC when people used electric eels to give electric shocks. Electricity and magnetism were used in people with just little success. However, in 1975, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) was developed to treat chronic pain. It was not until recently that infrared therapy was developed to improve wound healing, reduce the pain caused by arthritis, boost endorphin levels, and bioactivate neuromodulators.
Infrared therapy technology allows people to harness the benefits of the sun, without being exposed to harmful ultraviolet rays. Also, infrared therapy is safe and effective, without adverse side effects. As a matter of fact, infrared light is safe and is used even for infants in the neonatal intensive care.
Infrared light is absorbed by the photoreceptors in cells. Once absorbed, the light energy kickstarts a series of metabolic events, triggering several natural processes of the body on a cellular level.
The key to the efficacy of infrared light therapy may be nitric oxide, a gas that is vital to the health of the body’s arteries. Nitric oxide is a potent cell signaling molecule that helps relax the arteries, battles free radicals to reduce oxidative stress, prevents platelet clumping in the vessels, and regulates the blood pressure. Hence, this molecule enhances blood circulation to deliver vital nutrients and oxygen to damaged and injured tissues in the body.
The increase in the blood flow to the different parts of the body makes it possible for oxygen and nutrients to reach the cells, enabling them to function properly and effectively. Hence, this therapy stimulates the regeneration and repair of injured tissues, reducing pain and inflammation.
Infrared light therapy is applied in the treatment of various health conditions, including back pain, arthritis, bursitis, blunt trauma, muscle strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck pain, back pain, diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ), tendonitis, wounds, sciatica, and surgical incisions
Sauna Benefits: Feel Better. Do More. Live fully
Wellness is within reach because infrared’s healing light energy has been proven in many ways to help our bodies feel better. With gentler and more effective heat, Sunlighten’s infrared sauna benefits allow you to stay longer and reap more overall health benefits. Sunlighten has perfected our infrared technology to bring you the safest, most efficient and effective infrared available.
Detoxification
Sweating is one of the best ways to detox your body. Every time you sweat, you flush out the toxic substances and heavy metals that we encounter in everyday life. Infrared sauna therapy promotes this process by using what experts call a heavy metal detox protocol to mobilize specific toxins nearly three inches below the surface of your skin. Rather than simply heating the air to draw out toxins, infrared saunas heat your body from the inside to expel them from deep down.
Get a passive cardio workout while you relax.
Infrared sauna sessions raise your heart rate and increase circulation. This replicates a cardiovascular workout we term “passive cardio.” In fact, blood flow during infrared sauna use may rise from a normal rate of 5 litres/minute to up to 12 litres/minute. Your heart is a muscle; working it makes it stronger. A stronger cardiovascular system helps capillaries deliver more oxygen to muscle cells. For people with injuries or conditions precluding them from cardio activity, Sunlighten saunas can help serve as an alternative for needed cardio benefits.
Recover faster. Perform better.
No one wants muscle soreness to slow them down. Whether you’re a competitive athlete, a weekend golfer or simply trying to stay active, proper muscle recovery impacts your ability to keep doing what you love. Sunlighten’s infrared sauna therapy penetrates muscles deeper, increases blood flow and helps the body recover faster so you can stay in the game, of sports and life.
Beyond building muscle, the right recovery is important.
Most people understand the benefits of exercise and training when trying to enhance performance or build muscle. In fact, that’s often the only thing they do. Equally important is the recovery process, or downtime in between training, when energy is restored, and the body is able to heal tissue damage and rebuild muscles. Building muscle not only increases strength, but also boosts metabolism, reduces risk of injury, improves bone density and helps with excess body fat.
Infrared and red light benefit muscle recovery and performance.
Heat, in and of itself, is great for recovery and temporary pain relief. Infrared light heats the body from within and increases circulation and blood flow. Good circulation is critical for proper healing. Red blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients to the site of the strain or inflammation, which helps to create new blood vessels and tissues at the site. The more red and white blood cells that can get delivered to muscles, the quicker they rebuild.

It sounds too good to be true, but science supports it. Photobiomodulation uses invisible, near infrared (NIR) wavelengths (700 to 1,200 nanometres (nm)) and visible red light (620-750 nm) to deliver energy to cells. Research shows specific light frequencies have specific activity. NIR has the perfect wavelength (880 nm) to penetrate skin best. When NIR is applied to the skin, fibroblast cells absorb the light activity, stimulating production of collagen and elastin. When combined with visible red light at 660 nm, it is even more effective.1 Over time, those increases create thicker, younger looking skin, decrease lines, fade scars, and promote skin renewal, cell health and tissue growth.
Only Sunlighten saunas provide skin benefits of red light combined with near infrared.
ONLY LED TECHNOLOGY DELIVERS THE THERAPEUTIC LIGHT.
NASA developed NIR light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to grow plants in space, replicating the sun. A study in The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy showed significant improvements in skin appearance after 3 months of sauna skin therapy using NIR tech. Participants saw reduced wrinkles, improved skin tone, softness, smoothness, elasticity, clarity and firmness. Later studies show combining red light with NIR produces superior results by using both together to reverse skin ageing, renew youthful skin, and help wounds heal faster.
Sunlighten’s mPulse® Smart Sauna series is the only infrared sauna on the market with combination Red/NIR LED lights combined and includes an anti-ageing programme designed from this study.
Relaxation
Relaxation is more important to health than most people realize. While some stress is unavoidable, chronic stress can contribute to various health conditions such as leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, insomnia, heart disease, and autoimmunity. Infrared sauna therapy promotes relaxation by helping to balance your body’s level of cortisol, your body’s primary stress hormone. The heat generated by the sauna helps relax muscles and relieve tension and stress throughout the body.
Stress affects your entire body.
Studies show stress impacts the brain, blood pressure, weight and immune system. It creates memory problems, anxiety and learning difficulties. Neuroscientists say chronic stress can cause physical changes in grey and white matter, impact quantity of neurons and the size and connectivity of the amygdala. The American Institute of Stress estimates stress problems make up 75 to 90% of all primary care doctor visits. Cortisol is the culprit. Stress increases that “fight or flight” hormone that raises heart rate, blood pressure and deposits excess calories in our midsection.
Lowers’s cortisol levels – Infrared sauna therapy promotes relaxation by helping to balance your body’s level of cortisol, your body’s primary stress hormone. The heat generated by the sauna will also help to relax muscles and relieve tension throughout the body, allowing you to relax and de-stress. “Amy Myers, MD – New York Times bestselling author and an internationally acclaimed functional medicine physician”
Increase core body temp, activate your immune system.
Your body naturally defends itself. During a fever, body temperature rises and strengthens the immune system. It’s a signal to white blood cells and the body’s antiviral army of lymphocytes, neutrophils and interferons to come to the rescue. Increased body temp may also help fight infections as it stimulates heat shock proteins that deter viruses from reproducing and reduces inflammatory cytokine proteins. Raising body temp above normal for therapeutic treatment is called hyperthermia. Sunlighten’s infrared heating technology gives you the highest quality and quantity of infrared clinically proven to raise core body temperature by three degrees.
Sauna is the most effective way to induce hormesis.
Nature uses a process called hormesis to make us stronger. It’s a 2-phase response our bodies have to certain stressors, like exercise or fasting, heat or cold, where a little bit of strain creates strength or resilience. When our ancestors were less insulated from the environment, their bodies naturally responded to the challenges. Modern life requires us to recreate opportunities to challenge our immune system and sauna use is the most efficient and effective way to do that. The benefits of hormesis affect overall wellness, heart health, and immune system boost.
Do you want to sleep better.
Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to feeling your best. When you don’t get the rest you need, the health consequences quickly add up. It’s hard to give yourself fully to what—and who—you love. Infrared sauna helps the body in so many ways that can help improve sleep, and give you back the energy you need to thrive.
Saunaing may help you sleep better.
There’s not much scientific study on infrared saunas and sleep – yet. Anecdotal evidence often points to possibility and creates the need to learn more. In recent years, we began seeing a pattern of feedback from people noticing an effect on their sleep after they began saunaing. We asked our Sunlighten Community who experienced improvements in their sleep: 70% of those who responded said they had. Not everyone does, and the reasons for that are varied. For those who have, we found their experience compelling enough to share.
Morning sauna may help promote sleep drive.
Sleep drive (or “sleep pressure”) makes you sleepy and deepens your sleep. Your sleep pressure is governed by levels of adenosine, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Being active during the day is important to creating sleep drive in your body. Saunaing in the morning can energize the body for more activity that will create a better sleep drive. The passive cardio activity started by a sauna session also stimulates circulation similar to exercise, giving you one more tool to help your body be active without the physical demands of exercise.
Saunaing before bed may help sleep.
Circadian rhythm (your body’s 24-hour clock) affects sleep by helping signal the body to produce melatonin. Lowering core body temperature is one of the many cues to begin that process at night. A hot bath or infrared sauna before bed can result in lowering overall body temperature. Bringing heat to the surface of your skin can help lower it as you cool down. It also can decrease cortisol levels created by daily stress and induce relaxation which also aids sleep.
A 2019 study compared participants’ cardiovascular effects in a sauna and on an exercise bike. The increase in heart rate was similar to a short, moderate workout. Researchers stated, “A sauna session is a physical strain. Its long-term positive effects are comparable to sports activities.”2 The focus was on the benefits to the heart and cardiovascular system, rather than weight loss or muscle development. We call it a “passive cardio workout.”
Increase cellular metabolism.
People often report feeling energized after infrared sauna sessions. Cells need energy to perform their best, just like our bodies need energy to function. Near infrared stimulates cellular energy when the body’s energy-producing cells absorb the light energy (photons) and produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which fuels all cells. This can increase cell health and performance throughout the body and all of its systems.
Relieve stress and lower cortisol.
Studies have shown the direct connection between stress, cortisol and weight gain. Chronic stress leads to cortisol production in large amounts, which leads to obesity and weight gain. Dr. Amy Myers recommends infrared sauna for weight loss to help break the connection between cortisol and weight gain by naturally relieving stress. Stress relief lowers cortisol, which can help create a healthy metabolism, thus contributing to weight loss.
If you analyze the peer reviewed data, full spectrum infrared sauna therapy would be a multibillion dollar drug if it came in a pill. The ability to heal endothelium and improve symptoms and prognosis for congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease is remarkable. Sunlighten saunas are the only infrared saunas clinically shown to temporarily lower blood pressure and reduce belly fat, both contributing factors to a healthy heart.
