Gut health for improved athletic performance – 2 Part Series

This seminar series is designed for the sporting and health enthusiasts. Learn and understand how they can optimise their performance, reduce inflammation and enhance recovery through healthy digestive function.

Most athletes are aware of the high nutritional demands placed on their bodies for performance and recovery but not everyone fully understands just how important a healthy digestive function is for the absorption and assimilation of nutrients, a healthy immune, endocrine and nervous system and recovery from training and competition.

Gas, bloating, nausea, cramps, frequent colds, insomnia, poor recovery and low energy and mood are just some of the signs of gut dysfunction.

Seminar one - 22nd June

The first of this two part seminar series will discuss what can go wrong with the digestive system, symptoms which indicate dysfunction or underlying pathologies and suggested investigations that should be undertaken.  We will also touch on commonly used medications such as non-steroid anti-inflammatories and how they can impact on gut health.

Seminar two - 29th June

Seminar two will focus on what can be done to optimise gut health for athletes. Learn cost effective and practical remedies for athletes. Learn how to restore gut health through simple nutritional medicine and how to prevent pre-race illness that impact on your performance. Learn how to enhance your energy supply, how to maximise nutrient absorption from food, how to overcome inflammation and reduce symptoms quickly naturally without the side effects of medications.

Kate Smyth has been involved in sports for many decades and is passionate about helping athletes and sports enthusiasts with chronic conditions, fertility, immune issues and digestive health through her nutritional and phytotherapy medicine practice. She has been studying the integral role digestion has on health for five years and now works with sporting enthusiasts of all levels from the recreational fun runner, ironmen and women, cyclists, rowers, marathoners and elite endurance competitors. She also draws on her personal experience of using natural medicine during her professional sporting career after being diagnosed with a debilitating digestive disease.

Kate represented Australia at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, has been on programs with both the Victorian Institute of Sport and the Australian Institute of Sport. She has competed in the marathon, as well as national level cross country and distance track events. She is also an accredited athletics coach, is involved in national programs run through the IAAF and Athletics Australia and personally mentors aspiring elite athletes.
